Layer-by-Layer Microcement Application Training
Surface Preparation
As the first step, we must ensure that the surface is completely free from dust, grease, and any contaminants. The surface must be smooth, completely dry (without capillary moisture or moisture from plaster or cement), structurally sound, and as even as possible.
There are two types of surfaces where microcement can be applied:
1. Floors or walls that require repair and surface leveling
(For example, tiled walls or cement plaster walls. In the case of floors, all types of flooring require leveling regardless of their existing finish.)
2. Completely smooth walls
(For example, smooth plastered walls with joints or perfectly flat surfaces.)
For floors and walls that require leveling, an additional preparation step is necessary before applying microcement. In the case of smooth walls, the microcement application process is faster and more cost-effective.
Surface Leveling
Optional: In cases where microcement is applied on floors or walls that require leveling, fiberglass mesh should first be installed over the surface.
This mesh helps in two important ways:
- Improving the application of the base microcement layer (the microcement used for surface leveling)
- Covering tile imperfections and joints, creating a more uniform and consistent microcement finish
The use of fiberglass mesh helps achieve a stronger and more even microcement surface.
First, protective masking tape is applied to protect surrounding areas, corners, furniture, and other elements.
Then, the primer is applied. This product creates complete adhesion between the surface and the microcement layer.
The primer can be easily applied using a short-pile roller, and water can be used for cleaning the tools.
The drying time is normally between 20 to 40 minutes, depending on the absorption level of the surface.
For floors or walls that require leveling, microconcrete is applied over the fiberglass mesh and primer layer.
This microcement layer is applied in 1 mm thickness layers, and applying two coats of this product is recommended.
The application is performed using a steel trowel. After complete drying, the surface is sanded using 40-grit sandpaper to achieve a completely smooth and flawless finish.
After sanding, all dust must be removed using a vacuum cleaner or damp cloths, and the protective masking tape should then be removed.
Microcement Finishing
Place the protective masking tape. At this stage, we apply the fine microcement layer. This is the final micro-screed layer, which is an extremely thin microcement finish that creates beautiful marble-like effects.
It is applied using a special flexible plastic trowel. We recommend applying 2 layers of this microcement, each with a thickness of 0.1 mm (approximately the thickness of a sheet of paper), sanding between layers and on the final surface using 180–200 grit sandpaper.
The next step is to remove the sanding dust using a vacuum cleaner and then remove the protective masking tape.
Sealing
The protective masking tape is applied before starting this stage. The sealer eliminates the absorbency of the microcement surface and begins creating waterproof properties.
It also enhances the final color intensity of the microcement. Applying the sealer with a short-pile roller is the easiest and most effective method.
Final Protective Lacquer
This product is the final protective layer that preserves the microcement surface. A complete waterproof barrier is essential to make microcement resistant to common cleaning products such as bleach, ammonia, and limescale removers.
The final lacquer is a type of protective varnish that increases the durability and resistance of the finished surface.
There are three main types of lacquer available on the market:
- Gloss Finish
- Matte Finish
- Satin Finish
Manufacturers generally recommend glossy finishes for floors and matte or satin finishes for walls.
These products are also applied using a short-pile roller, and it is recommended to apply 2 or 3 coats for the best performance.
